A fascinating pair of early 20th-century brass candlesticks by Rostand Manufacturing Company, likely dating to circa 1910s–1930s, complete with unusual vintage spring-loaded constant-height candle sleeves.

The brass candlesticks feature substantial square stepped bases, traditional turned stems, and a beautifully aged finish. Each is stamped “ROSTAND” on the underside, identifying the maker as Rostand Manufacturing Company of Milford, Connecticut, an American manufacturer known for brass candlesticks, fireplace accessories, and decorative metalware.

What makes this pair especially interesting is the tall ivory-colored constant-height candle system. Rather than being ordinary solid taper candles, each reusable outer sleeve houses a removable metal cartridge containing a real wax candle refill and a spring-loaded mechanism.

How They Work: As the wax candle burns down, the internal spring is designed to gradually push the remaining candle upward, keeping the wick positioned near the top of the sleeve. This allows the candle to maintain its tall, uniform appearance instead of becoming progressively shorter like a traditional taper. The wax refill is consumed while the exterior sleeve remains in place for continued use with an appropriate replacement candle.

Both pieces retain their internal metal mechanisms as well as partially used wax candle inserts with previously burned wicks.

Dating Note: The circa 1910s–1930s date is an approximate period attributed to the Rostand brass candlesticks based on the maker and comparable examples. The removable spring-loaded candle sleeves and mechanisms are unmarked, so I cannot confirm their manufacturer, exact age, or whether they were original to the candlesticks or added later.

Condition: Good antique/vintage condition with wonderful age and character. The brass displays natural patina, spotting, discoloration, and surface wear consistent with age and previous use, including darker spotting on one of the square bases. The ivory candle sleeves show scratches, marks, discoloration, and areas of finish wear.

The internal metal mechanisms and partially used wax candle inserts are present. One candle assembly was carefully taken apart to confirm and photograph its construction. The candles have not been lit or functionally tested by Flea & Frame, and operation of the vintage spring mechanisms is not guaranteed. The wax inserts have been previously burned, and the amount of usable wax remaining is unknown. Sold as found.

Styling Ideas: These tall candlesticks would make a beautiful statement flanking a mantel, arranged on an antique buffet, or used as a dramatic centerpiece on a dining table. Their aged brass finish and architectural square bases pair beautifully with antique books, framed oil paintings, old silver, dark woods, and collected European or traditional décor.
