Description
A beautiful piece of functional nautical design, this vintage brass oil lamp features a traditional gimbaled wall or bulkhead mounting system, originally designed for marine use aboard boats and ships.
The lamp features a cylindrical brass fuel reservoir, ornate pierced burner gallery, adjustable wick mechanism and a tall clear glass chimney with delicate etched decoration. Behind the chimney is a round brass reflector designed to help direct and amplify the lamp’s glow.
The most interesting feature is the articulated brass mounting bracket. Gimbaled lamps were developed for use aboard moving vessels, allowing the lamp to pivot rather than remaining rigidly fixed as the boat shifted and rolled. Similar lamps were used in ship cabins, galleys and other interior spaces where dependable illumination was needed.
The aged brass has developed a wonderful warm patina with scratches, oxidation and surface wear that speak beautifully to its history. The combination of aged brass, etched glass and mechanical detailing makes this an exceptional display piece even when not used as a functioning lamp.
Perfect for nautical interiors, a study or library, collected antique lighting displays, or incorporated into an eclectic vintage vignette.
Approximate Measurements: 8.5” tall with bracket 14”
Condition: Vintage condition with expected surface wear, scratches, tarnish and patina to the brass. Glass chimney appears intact in the provided photos. Lamp has not been tested for operation and is being sold as a vintage decorative/collectible piece. Please review all photographs carefully as they are considered part of the description.
Please note: Maker and exact age are unknown. This piece is identified by its construction and hardware as a gimbaled marine-style oil lamp.
Styling Idea
This one would look fantastic mounted against dark wood, beadboard or an old paneled wall, especially beside maritime artwork, antique books, brass candlesticks or an old ship print.
