A forgotten page, a beautiful old frame, and a little piece of New York history brought together for a new life.
This one-of-a-kind Flea & Frame creation features a 1966 book print depicting “Broadway, N.Y.”, a historic view of bustling lower Broadway in New York City during the mid-19th century.
The image is based on the work of German-American artist Augustus Köllner (1813–1900), drawn from nature and lithographed by French printmaker Isidore-Laurent Deroy (1797–1886). The original scene dates to approximately 1848–1850 and captures Broadway filled with horse-drawn carriages and omnibuses, pedestrians, American flags and the architecture of a rapidly growing New York City.
The print used in this creation comes from a book published in 1966 and has been paired with a handsome vintage wood frame and warm tan mat. I especially love how the rich wood tones and neutral matting bring out the softly aged colors of the street scene and give the finished piece the appearance of something collected over generations.
Repurposing old book illustrations is one of my favorite parts of creating for Flea & Frame. Some of the older books I find are heavily damaged and can no longer reasonably be preserved as complete books, but tucked inside are often beautiful pages and illustrations still worth saving. I carefully repurpose those pages as artwork, pairing them with thrifted and vintage frames so both can be appreciated again rather than discarded.
At approximately 5 1/2” x 7 1/2”, this smaller framed piece is perfect for adding character to a gallery wall, displaying on a bookshelf, layering into a vintage vignette or styling alongside antique books, brass, pottery and other collected treasures.
