Florence Ceramics Pasadena California Vintage Pedestal Console Bowl | Circa 1950 | Gold Gilt

A striking and uncommon piece of mid-century California art pottery by Florence Ceramics of Pasadena, California.

Dating to approximately the late 1940s to early 1950s, this elegant pedestal console bowl comes from the earlier years of Florence Ceramics, a California pottery founded by Florence Ward in 1942. While the company became especially well known for its elaborately dressed figurines, Florence Ceramics also produced decorative artware, including bowls and console pieces, during this period.

This piece beautifully demonstrates the same attention to detail found in the company’s figurative work. A softly molded shell-form bowl rests upon an elaborate Rococo-inspired pedestal, richly sculpted with sweeping scrolls, shell-like flourishes and delicate hand-applied gold accents. The combination of the creamy white glaze and gold detailing gives it an elegant Hollywood Regency quality while retaining the distinctive look of postwar California pottery.

The underside bears the Florence Ceramics – Pasadena, California maker’s stamp, confirming its origin.

What makes this piece particularly special is the form. Florence Ceramics figurines are encountered much more frequently on today’s vintage market, while its elaborate decorative artware and console pieces can be considerably harder to find—especially in such beautifully preserved condition.
