Old New York architecture, an ornate vintage frame, and a beautiful illustration rescued from the pages of a book.

This one-of-a-kind Flea & Frame creation features a book print depicting St. Paul’s Chapel in New York City, after an architectural etching by French-American artist and architect Henry Wilfred Deville (1871–1932).

Signed “H. Deville” within the image, the detailed composition captures historic St. Paul’s Chapel in Lower Manhattan, with its distinctive steeple rising above the churchyard. Bare tree branches frame the scene while the much taller buildings of early 20th-century New York rise behind it—a wonderful contrast between the city’s colonial past and the rapidly changing skyline surrounding it.

I paired the print with an ornate antiqued-gold tabletop frame featuring raised scroll and floral embellishments at each corner. The aged metallic finish and beautifully detailed molding give the black-and-white architectural scene an old-world, collected look that feels as though the two pieces were always meant to be together.

Repurposing old book illustrations is one of my favorite parts of creating for Flea & Frame. Some older books I find are heavily damaged and can no longer reasonably be preserved as complete books, while many of the individual pages and illustrations remain beautiful. I love rescuing those pages and pairing them with thrifted and vintage frames, giving both a new purpose and another opportunity to be appreciated.

Measuring approximately 8” x 10”, this piece is designed for tabletop display only and includes an easel-style back. It would be beautiful displayed on a bookshelf, writing desk, library table, mantel or layered into a collected vintage vignette alongside old books, brass and other timeworn treasures.
