A beautiful example of mid-century Bulgarian porcelain, this vintage leaping deer figurine is attributed to the Izida Porcelain Factory of Elin Pelin, Bulgaria, a historic porcelain and ceramics producer active during the mid-20th century. Because these were manufactured in Soviet-era Bulgaria by the Izida factory, they were never natively imported or distributed to US retail stores during the mid-20th century.
Sculpted with an elegant, elongated silhouette, the doe is captured in mid-stride, giving the piece a wonderful sense of movement. Its graceful lines and highly stylized form reflect the modernist influence found throughout European decorative porcelain of the period.
The figurine is finished in a glossy warm cream glaze with softly airbrushed green shading along the molded grass-form base. Small hand-painted black details accent the ears, nose, tail, and hooves, giving the otherwise minimalist sculpture just the right amount of definition.
The underside bears the number 135, believed to be a model or form number.
